- for many 50plus adults, the decision to downsize and move from their beloved family home is a slow and emotional process. There are lots of loving memories wrapped up in their homes and the decision to leave is difficult. Their homes are comfortable, familiar and often cheaper to live in than some other options. So ... there are incentives to put off the decision to move.
- one important reason why older adults wait too long to downsize and move, is that they feel overwhelmed by the thought of disposing of their belongings, finding a new place to live, selling their home and moving. They often don't even know where to begin, and are unaware that there are services, like 50plus Transitions, to help them with the transition.
- many older seniors wait too long to make the move, and don't plan for their transition from the family home. Too often, some crisis arises in their lives and they are forced into moving. When this happens, the senior may lose control over the decision-making process, and have to choose between fewer housing options. I experienced this personally with my husband's parents and know how difficult it can be to act in a crisis situation.
- several factors ultimately prompt 50plus adults to make a move. Some common factors include deteriorating health; inability to maintain the home; social isolation; desire for a different lifestyle that is simplified and gives them more time to spend on activities that interest them
- in our busy society, the children of seniors who are ready to move are often not available to help with the downsizing and moving. They may not live in the same city, or their own lives are so busy with family and career demands that they don't have the time or energy to do the arduous work of moving.

Transition services refer to a range of services that help those in the 50plus market re-locate from their current home to their next home. These include: decluttering, disposing of belongings that can't be moved into the next home; packing up the belongings that will move; doing minor repairs and other work around the property to get it ready to sell; listing and selling the home; and helping the clients get settled into their new home.
